First year for race on 1/3 mile track in west stadium lot. Randall crashed on the 2nd lap. The crash rule at the time required the alternate to make up all 3 laps, regardless of when original rider fell, so WRC had little chance after that. Crash rule was changed after 1985.

First year for race on 1/3 mile track in west stadium lot -- women now rode 2/3 mile each instead of 1/2 mile. All WRC bike times under 1:40.

First rider finished last, and we slowly made up time, especially with sizzling rides from Ted and Chris Ehlers. Lovett led for the bulk of the race, but by the eighth rider WRC was on their tail. Dan sat on the Lovett rider’s wheel for two laps and then dusted him on the backstretch [I have this on VHS]. From that point, Seth and Tom had no competition and WRC won by nearly a half lap. Entire team was under 2:15 before race day, including alternates.

Nancy pulled WRC into first. No contest after that. Team eclipsed previous record by 1 second.

WRC came out of the pit at the back of the pack, and fell victim to first lap crash between Wiess and Jones. Fortunately, Kevin got back on his bike and the team slowly made up time. Baker and Hanszen were in the lead for most of the race with Lovett and WRC not far behind. On the seventh rider, Hanszen threw a chain and Lovett overtook Baker by the beginning of the last rider. Ted, WRC's anchor, caught up to Baker and in the sprint to the finish, the two knocked wheels and Baker went down, finishing third behind Lovett and WRC. Lovett’s anchor, Chris Kreidler, set the track record that day (1:58) on a track bike (single gear).

Leslie put us in the lead, but Mimi got passed by Hanszen and Lovett. Jen passed Lovett on the second turn of the first lap, and pulled us into first in front of the pit; her time was a track record for a brief period. After that, our lead was uncontested. Laura caught the wheel of the last Lovett rider (Millicent Coil, whom we were lapping) and broke the track record. We lapped almost every team (except second place Hanszen) and broke the existing team track record of 16:36 (which was ours from the previous year). Hanszen finished second, Lovett third. We were expecting serious competition from Jones, but their first rider fell in the pits and they had numerous penalties.

We were paralyzed from the start with two wet chugs in a row, then two track penalties were called on Karl (one for weaving and one for crossing the white line). All the times were incredibly fast: all but one under 2:10. We managed to hang on to third place, while Jones and Lovett worked with each other and pulled way ahead. Jones edged Lovett by less than half a second to win their first ever men’s race. We finished third, ahead of Baker, Hanszen, Wiess, Sid, Brown (their first men’s team) and GSA.

Leslie was the last rider out of the pit and the first rider in, with a time just tenths off the track record. However, Ibrah’s chug was wet and Leslie was assessed a track penalty, so Carla came out about fifth place. The second chug was also wet. Hanszen led for most of the race with Jones not far behind, and we were steadily catching up. Ketti caught up to Jones’ back wheel, and Beth O’Donnell put us into second. Ruth and Jen made up a lot of ground, so Nancy came out of the pits right on Hanszen’s back wheel. Nancy passed Hanszen (Mari Ochai) at the beginning of the second lap and pulled away. Hanszen was assessed a chug penalty right before the tenth rider, so Sarah had no competition. We broke our own track record by one second, including three penalties! We are still the fastest women’s bike team ever, with the average time just under 1:30. Hanszen finished seven seconds behind, followed by Jones. Sid fielded its first women's team, finishing last, although their lead rider, Eva Belik, rode a 1:30.

Very bad wind on the backstretch. WRC held onto the pack through the first few riders, but defending champs Jones steadily pulled ahead, eventually lapping every team but us. The times were good, but without the benefit of a draft, there was little we could do to make up time on Jones.

First off, the wind sucked. Also, there was a false start in the women’s race, and the race was restarted almost immediately — without WRC having a rider ready. Carla sprinted to get in the pit by the time the race started. She managed to keep us in 4th place. Elisa rode very well. Jen pulled us into third ahead of Jones, although the leaders (Sid and Hanszen) were far ahead. The times were not what they could have been, and the rides were not all smart rides. We gradually gained ground and passed Sid and even Jones, while Hanszen pulled farther into the lead. Jen's chug was wet so Nancy Jones came out of the pit with Jones’ Gretchen Wasserstrom on her wheel and got passed on the second lap. Sarah rode without any chance of catching up or being passed. Hanszen finished first and their anchor, Steph Green, was the only woman that day to break 1:30 (she rode a 1:29). Wasserstrom and Jones anchor Andi Galt both rode 1:31. Sid was not too far behind — they had some strong riders like leadoff Eva Belik (1:33) and anchor Mary Roth (1:37).
